Audience Research

I screened the finished film 'A Certain Romance?' to my A2 Media class and asked them to consider a number of questions to see what our main target audience 'teenagers - students' thought of it. I presented the findings on sticky notes in the following video:

Our feedback was 100% positive, with many commenting on the effective use of music that fitted well with the story. Also many agreed we had the right balance of cinematography with a strong narrative, it was also commented on that the film was easy to follow and enjoyable.

Why our film can be a success

The idea for 'A Certain Romance?' came to mus after noticing some messages carved in the snow, I thought it would make a good story to show how they got there and why.
I believe a love story makes a good narrative as the questionnaire results carried out in my media class showed the majority were attracted to simple stories with a thought-provoking twist and that the Romance genre was the second most popular.

Genre and Comparative Texts

I believe my Short Film idea can be largely compared to the 2007 Romantic Drama 'P.S I Love You' starring Gerard Butler and Hilary Swank, as it features a touching storyline about a man communicating with his wife through a series of letters after his death - the film was very successful at the box office particularly with the female audience.
However in contrast to the mainstream 'P.S I Love You' I would like to target my film to a more 'indie' audience, we obviously do not have the budget to produce the next Hollywood blockbuster so I shall be relying on an artistic narrative much in the manner of 'Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind' (2004) starring Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet as the unconventional couple who decide to erase one another from their memories. The film uses a number of good visual techniques: the main female protagonist, Clementine, changes her hair colour according to her mood. There are also many though provoking shots filmed using the elements such as a snow covered beach and surreal instances where characters disappear and faces are distorted.

I have decided to create a film poster for the short film I'm Here. Because i will be creating a film poster for my final product. I have tried to make my poster as contrasting as possible. I decided to make the colours look blocky and create a silhouette with the two characters.

Viral Marketing

Viral marketing is an incredibly important advertisement and awareness campaign for films. Viral marketing is about creating a real world within your film with diffrent events that can be almost completely unrelated to your film and this makes it living and breathing with similar coverage as is given to news stories in the real world. The most common type of film that uses viral marketing are science fiction, action and horror movies. There intentions are to engross you in the film and to make you look for other materials regarding the film which is basically more film advertisements and this also increases word of mouth and interest in the film.

The first film that really made a sucess out of viral marketing was The blair Whitch Project. This was a small independent film made for $50,000 which is penuts in hollywood terms. It also has one of the highest ever profit margins for a film as it made over $100,000,000.

It used the internet for the first time creating official websites as well as "unnoficial fan websites" set up by the film makers to create a social buzz around the film.

CloverField is one of the new breed of viral marketing films. This film had a budget of $25,000,000 which is quite small by hollywood standards and made $171,000,000.

One of the main success of this film was the advertising. Up until the full trailer release which was 1 year after the initial poster marketing and 3 months after a short trailer was broadcast. This ment nobody knew much about the storyline other than it was filmed in handheld camera and had a monster. This film has a similar formula to Blair Witch as it features an unknown cast and hand held camera and presents it as found footage. This creates suspension of disbelief and makes you more involved in the characters as you feel they re real people in an extraordianry situation.

Mise en scene

Mise en scene is a French expression which is used to explain the various design aspects within a film. When applied to the cinema, mise-en-scène refers to everything that appears before the camera and its arrangement, composition, sets, costumes, actors and lighting. Mise-en-scène also includes the positioning and movement of actors on the set, which is called blocking. In modern filmwork, these are all the areas overseen by the director.
It is important because it sets up the content and feel of the film. Uses of dark screen and aloof acting are conventions of horror whereas bright direct lighting and vivid colours are conventions of romantic films.
The descent is a horror film that uses dark and red filters to make it scarier.

Importance of narrative on film and film marketing

Narrative is completely vital to films. It is the content of the film and sets the pace and tempo of a film. Its very important to keep an even narrative in films, especially low budget ones as they do not have the CGI spectacle of the Hollywood film industry. They also are dictated by narrative, many blockbusters are uneven and in the final third the plot unfolds too quickly and all the build up of the film ends abruptly.

The importance of narrative in the marketing is also vital, the viral videos must not reveal too much of the plot but enough to display the genre iconography toward the target market.

Short film directors

Short film directors make short films in an attempt to get their ablities noticed. The short films require a very small budget in comparison to hollywood films. The short films are basically a highlight reel of what the director can do.

Joe Nussbaum is an American director who first found success after directing his self funded film George Lucas in Love. After this was passed around the offices of Hollywood he the signed a deal with dream works studios and has since directed various films such as the sleepover, American pie the naked mile and Sydney white.

Across the hall- Adrien Grenier

Grenier is an american actor and producer. In 2005 he produced part wrote and starred in across the hall. After the sucess of the short film across the hall was turned into a full feature length adaptation. Grenier gained rave reviews and this helped him to get the role of Vincent Chase in the hit show Entourage. Since then he has starred in many hollywood films and directed some as well.

Short film festival

This is a short film festival which focus' on comedy shorts instead of the more conventional dramatic ones.
Short film festivals are set up for amateur film makers to display their work in hope of becoming a professional film director or for the fun of having an audience for your work.
The people who really take notice of short films are movie studios. The studios have people there looking at the films and looking for new directors and talent and a short film is a good way to get noticed on a minuscule budget.

Short film 3

Alive In Joburg - Neill Blomkamp from Spy Films on Vimeo.

This film is called alive in jo burg, The feature film District 9 is based on this short film. I like this film because of the attempted cinematography and content of the story. Its a social commentary on the apartheid but using aliens instead of africanners, it manages to tell an interesting story in such a short time.
